Why 68% of Carts Are Abandoned: 9 Baymard Reasons + Iran Fixes for Your Shop
By Arash Latifi — Founder, The DevArt
Global cart abandonment is 68%. Learn the 9 Baymard reasons with real data and 3 quick fixes for Iranian shops (payment, shipping, trust).
You pay for traffic, products, and design — then 7 out of 10 shoppers leave at checkout. Baymard spent 140,000 hours testing users and found the average abandonment is 68.3% — not because they changed their mind, but because the form exhausted them.
That's why I also said in the Tehran shop checklist that checkout is the most important page. Here are the 9 reasons that explain 80% of drops, with Iran-specific fixes you can ship this week for 20-30% more sales.
Real case: Food delivery 42% → 61% checkout completion
For the food delivery platform — menu browsing, cart, checkout — completion was 42%. Users picked food, entered the cart, then bounced on payment.
Testing with 12 users (mobile, 4G Iran):
- 7 stuck on "exact address + plaque + unit" (3 separate fields)
- 5 saw shipping only at the last step (45k Toman shock)
- 4 didn't know if ZarinPal was safe (no trust badge)
What we did: 3 address fields → 1 smart field with map suggestion, shipping shown from product card + sticky cart total, and trust badge + "Secure payment via ZarinPal" next to the button. Result: 42% → 61% (+45% sales on same traffic). That's the power of a simple cart.
9 Baymard reasons that kill carts (Iran edition)
Baymard tested 50 reasons; these 9 explain 80% of drops (source: baymard.com/research/checkout-usability):
1. Extra costs too high (48%)
Price shows 290k, checkout becomes 335k (shipping + tax). In Iran: 30-50k shipping, packaging, VAT.
Fix: Show shipping from product card and sticky cart total. Use "Free shipping over 500k" with a progress bar.
2. Must create an account (26%)
Forced registration is the #1 killer in Iran — no one wants passwords and email verification.
Fix: Guest checkout + OTP via mobile. After purchase ask "Create an account to track your order?"
3. Long/confusing process (21%)
5 steps, 8 fields each. User doesn't know where they are.
Fix: 3 steps with progress: "Cart → Info → Pay". Delete every non-essential field (Company name for B2C? Delete it).
4. Can't see total price (16%)
Total only on the last click.
Fix: Sticky total in sidebar/footer on mobile, always visible.
5. Slow site/errors (13%)
4s load on 4G Iran = bounce.
Fix: next/image for cart thumbnails, no heavy slider on checkout. See the speed guide.
6. Don't trust the site (18%)
No trust seal, no phone, anonymous payment.
Fix: Enamad + ZarinPal logo + WhatsApp + "7-day return" next to pay button.
7. Limited shipping/payment options
Only post, only online pay.
Fix: Show "Cash on delivery (Tehran) + online + installments" upfront. Add same-day courier for Shahriar/Andisheh.
8. Confusing coupon field
Big "Have a coupon?" box makes users leave to hunt for codes.
Fix: Small text link "Have a coupon?" that expands on click.
9. Hard to return to cart
Editing quantity needs a full page reload.
Fix: Slide-out drawer with +/- without reload.
Table: Cluttered vs clean cart
| Metric | Cluttered (5 steps, 12 fields) | Clean (3 steps, 6 fields) | Impact | | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | | Completion | 38-42% | 58-65% | +50% sales on same traffic | | Time to pay | 3:20 | 1:10 | Every 30s saved ≈ +8% conversion | | Form errors | 22% | 6% | Masked mobile/national ID | | "Payment failed" tickets | 18% | 4% | Badge + clear errors |
48-hour checklist
- [ ] 1. Free guest checkout: Remove forced signup — OTP via mobile.
- [ ] 2. Show cost early: Shipping from product card + sticky total; add "free shipping" progress bar.
- [ ] 3. Halve fields: Name + mobile + smart address (1 field) + notes. Delete company/fax.
- [ ] 4. Stick trust: Enamad + payment logo + WhatsApp + 7-day return next to pay.
- [ ] 5. Test on real phone: Place one full order on a real device; fix every pause.
When this doesn't help — honestly
- No demand: Clean cart won't sell a bad product. Build demand first.
- 30% overpriced with no edge: Users go to Digikala; cart isn't the excuse.
- B2B with proforma: Don't do guest checkout; you need formal quotes.
In those cases fix offer and pricing first, then cart. That's the order we follow for Tehran e-commerce.
FAQ
1. How many checkout steps are ideal?
3: cart → info → pay. Single-page also works if fields are few and total is always visible.
2. Where to put the coupon field?
Small text link above total: "Have a coupon?" — expands on click. A big box in the middle lifts abandonment 8-10% (Baymard).
3. Cost and timeline?
Checklist fixes: 1-2 days, 8-15M. Full cart rebuild (drawer, smart address, multi-pay): 2-3 weeks from 35M. Send a screenshot to contact — we'll tell you which bucket you are in for free.
